Calixto Garcia was born on August 4, 1839 in Holguin. Garcia was of Cuban-Creole descent and was a large, strong ,educated man with a short fused. Garcia was the grandson of Calixto Garcia de Luna e Izquierdo. Garcia's grandfather fought the Battle of Carabobo in which is now called Venezula. His grandfather, who dropped the aristocratic de Luna part when he took refuge in Cuba, was jailed for demanding emancipation for the slaves, constitutional freedom for all, and it is reported trying to hang a priest who opposed this, on March 18, 1837. Around the age of 18, Garcia joined in on the instagation of Cuban uprising. Garcia fought for five years until his arrest by the Spanish. In the attempt to avoid imprisonment Garcia, shot himself and survived the gun shot. He was imprisioned until the Pact of Zanjon was signed in 1878. Garcia travelled to Paris and New York between imprisonments. In keeping to his quest, Garcia joined in the litte war from 1879 to 1880 as well as the War of Independence. Garcia survived the Ten Years' War and fought in the War of Independence. He made several escapes from prison in which he return to his goal of gaining Cuba's independence. Garcia died at the age of 59.
