Calhoun County is a county located in the U.S. State of Michigan. As of 2000, the population is 137,985. Its county seat is Marshall6. Calhoun County was established in 1833 and named after John C. Calhoun, Vice President under both John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,861 km² (718 mi²). 1,836 km² (709 mi²) of it is land and 25 km² (10 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.35% water.

census2 of 2000, there are 137,985 people, 54,100 households, and 36,247 families residing in the county. The population density is 75/km² (195/mi²). There are 58,691 housing units at an average density of 32/km² (83/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 83.93% White, 10.89% Black or African American, 0.63% Native American, 1.11% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.29% from other races, and 2.13% from two or more races. 3.15% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 54,100 households out of which 31.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.60% are married couples living together, 13.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.00% are non-families. 27.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 3.01.

In the county the population is spread out with 26.00% under the age of 18, 8.90% from 18 to 24, 28.30% from 25 to 44, 23.20% from 45 to 64, and 13.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 94.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $38,918, and the median income for a family is $47,167. Males have a median income of $37,001 versus $26,464 for females. The per capita income for the county is $19,230. 11.30% of the population and 8.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 14.20% are under the age of 18 and 9.00% are 65 or older.
