\'Bulbasaur' (Japanese: Fushigidane (フシギダネ Fushigidane), German: Bisasam, French Bulbizarre, Korean Isanghaessa) is a fictional character: a basic grass-type Pokémon that evolves into Ivysaur at level 16 and Venusaur at level 32. Bulbasaur is a lizard-like creature with a large bulb on its back; the bulb grows with the Pokémon and contains energy that the Pokémon can use up when necessary, similar to a camel storing water in its hump.
Name origin
Fushigidane is a portmanteau of ふしぎ (fushigi - mystery) and たね (tane - seed). Bulbasaur is a portmanteau of bulb and sauros (lizard from Greek).
In Pokémon Red/Blue and Pokémon FireRed/LeafGreen, Bulbasaur is one of the starter Pokémon, together with Charmander and Squirtle.
In Pokémon Yellow, Bulbasaur is not a starter; rather, it's obtained in Cerulean City. In Pokémon Gold/Silver/Crystal, Bulbasaur must be obtained through trading with another cartridge. In Pokémon Sapphire/Ruby, Bulbasaur is not available at all. However, Bulbasaur can be traded from Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen.
Bulbasaur also appears in the Nintendo 64 game Pokémon Snap.
Bulbasaur is vulnerable to Ice, Bug, Fire, Psychic and Flying, and strong against Water, Electric, Grass, and Fighting.
Ash uses Bulbasaur's long vines to help him out of many tight spots. They are particularly useful when there's no ropes handy.
Bulbasaur is very wise for being a pokémon. Using its wisdom, it has decided not to evolve into Ivysaur.
Bulbasaur left Ash to keep order in Professor Oak's lab when the Pokémon there started fighting amongst themselves.
