Brachiosaurus (BRACK-ee-oh-SAW-rus) was a sauropod dinosaur, and the tallest animal ever known, until the discovery of the Sauroposeidon. Discovered in 1903 by Dr. E. S. Riggs, it thrived in the late Jurassic period of the Mesozoic era. The species is most notable for its long front limbs - its name is from the Greek brachion ("arm") + sauros ("lizard") – and for its extraordinarily long neck, which it is thought could be held upright for a short time. Complete fossil skeletons have been found in Tanzania, and partial remains in North America, showing a length of around 25 metres. Brachiosaurus was a herbivore, feeding on the vegetation of the period.
