Boss Radio Guide, Meaning , Facts, Information and Description
Boss Radio was the name chosen to promote a new radio programming format launched in May 1965 on KHJ, Los Angeles at 930 on the AM radio dial. The station was owned by RKO, a legendary U.S. corporation that produced radio and television content, which was unhappy with how poorly the station was performing in the local ratings. Two California radio programming pioneers, Bill Drake and Gene Chenault, who had been successful in radio programming in San Francisco and Fresno were hired to remake KHJ into a financial success by switching the radio format to rock and roll music. The unsuccessful programming on KHJ, one of the original radio stations in Los Angeles, consisted of block segments of drama, mystery, soap opera, news, and music, both live and recorded. That so-called block programming stands in stark contrast to a more contemporary radio programming format that emerged around 1950 and become known as formula radio programming. When Drake and Chenault brought rock and roll formula radio programming to KHJ, within a few months the station became the most popular radio station in the Los Angeles market.
