Bomb disposal is a term for making explosive devices safe by disarming or detonating them.
A bomb squad is a police unit (in the US), specializing in the disarming of explosive devices planted by criminals or terrorists.
Techniques
Several techniques may be employed in the rendering safe of a suspected explosive device. These include the use of X-ray imagers, remotely controlled robots, and bomb blankets.
One of the most common methods used in bomb disposal include having a robot remove a suspect package to an isolated or shielded location where it can be disposed of with a minimum of damage. If it has been determined that the device may not be moved safely, many robots are capable of firing a shotgun shell or water cannon in an attempt to either detonate or disrupt the device. Water cannons, also known as disruptors, can also be used without a robot by supporting them on a small stand, and may be used to sever wires or other components in an attempt to prevent detonation.
Attempts to defuse devices manually will typically only be tried when remote methods are not feasible. As protection, the person in question usually wears a heavy specialized suit made of kevlar and ceramic with a polycarbonate face shield, all of which can increase the person's chance of survival should the device explode, but the hands are usually exposed to allow for maximum manual dexterity in the task.

The military term Explosive Ordnance Disposal, can be defined as: "The protection of people, resources, and the environment, by eliminating or reducing the threat posed by explosive, chemical, incendiary, nuclear, or biological ordnance and other hazardous explosive situations, including improvised explosive devices,(IEDs)". EOD units offer detailed technical advice and expertise that will promote rational, informed, sound, and competent decisions.
