A boil is a localized accumulation of pus in the skin, resulting from infection. They may begin with itching, and proceed to become red, swollen, and painful. Boils are traditionally treated by lancing and draining them. Antibiotics may also be used, if the infection is caused by bacteria, such as staphylococcus aureus. The application of heat may help bring the boil to a head and hasten healing by increasing blood flow to the region. Good hygiene should be maintained to help prevent the spread of infection.
