Details, Explanation and Meaning About Bishojo

Bishojo Guide, Meaning , Facts, Information and Description

Bishōjo (美少女; literally, "beautiful young girl"), often spelled bishoujo, is the Japanese term used to refer to pretty girls. Since bi- generally refers to feminine beauty, the meaning is more poignant for bishōjo, unlike the male term, bishōnen;, which tends to mean male with a more effeminate beauty.

Bishōjo are used in almost all genres of anime and manga, ranging from shōjo; to mecha.

A 'bishōjo series' can describe a series with a nearly all female cast, the show using lots of cute girls in sometimes unusual or strange situations where they might not be expected to be. The series' main hook is understood to be the pretty girls, although some bishōjo series are well-written. Many love comedies, such as Love Hina, are bishōjo series.

Although they may contain similar elements, a bishōjo series is not the same thing as a shōjo; series. The former features girls as the cast and is mainly male-marketed, while the latter is marketed towards a female audience.
