Bischofsheim (Mainspitze) is a town of 13,000 residents on the left (south) bank of the Main river, not far from the confluence with the Rhine. A rail junction (crossing of the line from Mainz to Frankfurt with the line from Wiesbaden to Darmstadt) and Autobahn junction (A60 and A671) supplement the river transportation possibilities.In the Middle Ages, it was ruled by the Archbishop of Mainz, but later (1579) fell to Hesse-Darmstadt. In 1930 it was annexed to the city of Mainz but regained its independence in 1945 under American occupation.
