Bethany - "house of dates, or house of misery" - was the name of two places in Ancient Israel:

  • A place on the east of Jordan River. (John 1:28) Its exact location is unclear.
  • A small village on the southeastern slope of the Mount of Olives, less than two miles from Jerusalem, known as the home of Mary, Martha and Lazarus in the New Testament. It is frequently mentioned in connection with memorable incidents in the life of Jesus Christ. (Matt. 21:17; 26:6; Mark 11:11, 12; 14:3; Luke 24:50; John 11:1; 12:1) The place is today the place of the village El Azariyeh, the name meaning "Place of Lazarus" in Arabic.
