The Battle of Klendathu was the first military engagement between the Terran Federation and the Bugs of Klendathu in the novel and movie Starship Troopers.
After the Bugs launched an asteroid against Earth, killing over eight million people and vaporizing Buenos Aires, the Federation declared war against the Bugs. Believing that they were smarter than the Bugs, the Federation sent the Fleet and Mobile Infantry to Klendathu. When the military arrived, the Bugs launched plasma against the orbiting starships, destroying several vessels. Thousands of troops were dispatched to the surface. However, the humans underestimated the enemy, who was smarter than they expected. 100,000 soldiers were killed in less than an hour, with almost no one injured.
