Barque Guide, Meaning , Facts, Information and Description
A
barque, sometimes spelled
bark, was a particular type of ship's hull in the mid-
18th century. It was a
ship-rigged vessel with a plain bluff bow but a full stem with windows.
HM Bark Endeavour, commanded by Captain
James Cook was a famous example.
By the end of the 18th century, however, the word came to refer to a particular type of rig, three (or more) masted with only fore and aft sails on the aftermost mast but square sails on fore, main and any other masts.
Throughout the period of sail, the word also was used as a shortening of the barca-longa of the Mediterranean Sea.
