The Bank of Finland (Finnish: Suomen Pankki, Swedish: Finland's Bank) is the central bank of Finland. The Bank of Finland has roots back to 1811, but it was not officially formed until Finland became independent in 1917.The Bank of Finland is owned by the Finnish government. All documents that are binding on the Bank of Finland must be signed by two Bank of Finland officials. Authorization to sign is either based directly on the official's position or on a Bank of Finland decision. The highest rank in the bank is the Governor. The current governor of the Bank of Finland is Erkki Liikanen who began in the position after his predecessor Matti Vanhala had to retire due to serious illness in 2004.
Until 1999, when Finland adopted the Euro, the Bank of Finland was the sole creator and regulator of Finnish Markka (FIM).
