Back of the Yards, Chicago Guide, Meaning , Facts, Information and Description
Back of the Yards is an industrial and residential neighborhood on the Southwest Side of Chicago, so named because it is near the site of the former Union Stockyards. Life in this neighborhood at the beginning of the 20th century is profiled in Upton Sinclair's The Jungle. According to the 2000 Census, 51,696 people live in the area; 50 per cent Hispanic, 35 per cent black and 13 per cent white.This neighborhood was famously organized by Saul Alinsky in the 1950s.
