In the history of France, the Ancien Régime (French for Old Regime or Old Order) is the social and political system established in France under the old absolute monarchy, subsequently swept away by the French Revolution of 1789 with the fall of Louis XVI.The phrase Ancien Régime is almost always used to refer to France. However, the phrase Old Regime can also be used to refer to "old regimes" in other countries through analogy with the Ancien Régime of France.
