Ambrosio O'Higgins Guide, Meaning , Facts, Information and Description

Ambrosio O'Higgins (born Ambrose O'Higgins) (1720? - 1801) born in Ballinary, County Sligo (between Ballinafad and Riverstown, on the shores of Lough Arrow) Ireland; who, after emigrating to Spain and later enrolling in the Spanish imperial service, finally became Viceroy of Peru (New Extremadura Province, comprising present-day Peru, Chile, Bolivia, Northwest Argentina and parts of Western Brazil) between 1796 and 1801.

Ambrose was the father of Bernardo O'Higgins, who later became "Supreme Director" of Chile (a title whose practical definition would be close to the ancient Greek sense of "tyrant") after its independence from the Spanish Empire. Though Ambrose never officially recognised his son as his legal heir,he paid for his education in England and left him all his Chilean possesions. Before becoming Viceroy, he worked as a merchant in neighbouring Argentina, but was subsequently brought to Chile by another Irishman in Spain's service, Garland. Ambrose managed to get the job of General Governor of the colony. As Governor he was incredibly active, promoting the construction of the Santiago-Valparaiso road, the Government Palace (La Moneda), and setting up a postal service between La Plata colony and the General Capitany of Chile.
