All-American Guide, Meaning , Facts, Information and Description

All-American is a term that can have varied and even contradictory meanings. To nativists and xenophobes in the United States, it can mean something that would meet with their approval -- something archconservative, and probably comprised of or oriented primarily or solely toward white Protestants. To those of a more liberal mindset, the same term can mean something diverse and inclusive. To this group something could be truly All-American if it were comprised of or appealed to Americanss of all stripes: Asian-Americans, African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, Jewish-Americans, gay Americans, Native Americans, Irish-Americans, Italian Americans and others, especially any group who had been previously stigmatized or marginalized.
The term "All-American" can also be used as a reference to an athlete selected as a member of an All-America team, as in "Eddie George was named an All-American football player by both wire services in 1995."
All-American is the nickname of the 82nd Airborne Division of the United States Army, so called because the initial recruits came from all of the then-48 states of the US.
