Aeris Gainsborough (originally Aerith Gainsbourg in Tetsuya Nomura's art), is a flower girl from the video game Final Fantasy VII, and one of the main playable characters. After a run in with the Turks, she asks Cloud Strife to be her bodyguard, and then joins AVALANCHE. She fights with a metal quarterstaff.Aeris is the final remaining Cetra, or ancient, after her mother Ilfalna died, as she had grown weak from 7 years worth of testing. Her father, Professor Gast, was executed while trying to fend off Shin-Ra soldiers. She was adopted by Elmyra, who learned of Aeris's heritage from Tseng, a Shin-Ra operative.
Aeris is killed by Sephiroth, who stabs her while she is attempting to summon Holy by using her white materia, which is used to stop Meteor, which is summoned by the white materia's counterpart, the black materia. It later conspires that she did manage to summon Holy, and it is this that finally stops Meteor from destroying the planet.
Aeris makes an appearance in both Final Fantasy Tactics and Kingdom Hearts. In the latter she is voiced by Mandy Moore. She is also believed to appear in the CGI movie , though it is unknown whether it will be a simple flashback scene or if she appears in person.
