- First flights of a power-driven model aeroplane with a petrol engine (Prof. Langley, USA).
- The Wright brothers optimise their wing design with the help of wind tunnel measurements.
- July 31 - German meteorologists Berson and Süring climb to 10,800 m in a free balloon.
- August 18 - Gustave Whitehead claimed to have flown a heavier-than-air aircraft (Whitehead Aeroplane No. 21) at Bridgeport, Connecticut. The flight is said to have covered 270 metres (880 ft) and to have involved steering the craft to avoid trees. Due to a lack of supporting evidence, this claim is usually considered dubious.
- Wilhelm Kress trials a triplane seaplane that makes a short hop before capsizing.
- 19 October - Albert Santos-Dumont flies his Dirigible No. 6 around the Eiffel Tower to collect a FF100,000 prize.
- 29 October - the Aero Club of Great Britain is established.
